Cooking Liquid

Water or low-sodium chicken broth
For cooking rice Β· no added salt Β· adds palatability
400 ml
07

Method

1

Cook the rice

Rinse brown rice and cook in broth until fully absorbed (~30 min). Set aside to cool.

2

Steam vegetables

Steam carrots and sweet potato 10 min. Add broccoli, peas, spinach for final 2 min. No seasoning.

3

Cook proteins

Warm coconut oil, cook chicken through. In same pan, cook liver 3–4 min only. Scramble egg separately β€” no salt.

4

Combine

Mix rice, vegetables, all proteins, drained sardines, flaxseed, sunflower seeds gently in a large bowl.

5

Cool & portion

Cool fully (45+ min). Divide into 4 portions. Fridge up to 3 days, freeze up to 6 weeks.

6

Add supplements at serving time

Always add supplements to the cooled, individual portion just before serving β€” never during cooking or before freezing.

Add to each portion at serving time β€” never during cooking. Heat and freezing degrade some supplements. All doses below are for a toy poodle (3–5 kg).

01

Essential Every Serving

πŸ₯š
Ground Eggshell Powder
β…› tsp per serving (= ~450 mg calcium)
The #1 homemade diet deficiency. Bake shells at 150Β°C for 10 min, grind fine. Or buy canine calcium carbonate. Essential every single meal.
Whole food option available
🌿
Kelp Powder (food-grade)
Tiny pinch (β…› tsp for standard β€” scale to a very small pinch for toy)
Iodine for thyroid health. Critical for poodles predisposed to hypothyroidism. Do not exceed β€” too much iodine is also harmful. Store in a sealed jar away from light.
🌻
Ground Sunflower Seeds (Vitamin E)
ΒΎ tsp per serving
Richest whole food Vitamin E source. Grind a week's supply Sunday, store sealed in fridge. More bioavailable than synthetic Vitamin E supplements.
Whole food β€” preferred over supplement
πŸ’Š
Chelated Zinc
3–5 mg per serving (toy poodle dose)
Poodles are zinc-sensitive β€” deficiency causes coat thinning and skin issues. Use chelated zinc (zinc methionine or gluconate), never zinc oxide. Adjust after 3-month bloodwork.
02

Situational

🐟
Fish Oil Capsule (1000 mg)
1 capsule on non-sardine weeks only
EPA/DHA omega-3s for joint and coat health. Only needed when rotating to turkey or beef without oily fish. Skip on sardine and salmon weeks.
03

Age 4+ Onwards

🦴
Glucosamine + Chondroitin
250 mg glucosamine / 200 mg chondroitin per serving (toy dose)
Begin preventatively at age 4–5, not only when symptoms appear. Green-lipped mussel powder is an excellent natural alternative β€” rich in both compounds plus omega-3.
Green-lipped mussel powder is whole food equivalent

Simpler route: If managing individual supplements feels like a lot, BalanceIT Canine or Rx Essentials for Dogs are vet-formulated powders that cover most of the above in one scoop. Ask your vet for the correct dose for your toy poodle's weight.

Toggle on the functional foods and herbs you want to include. All amounts are per serving for a toy poodle. Add at serving time, not during cooking.

01

Longevity Boost Blend

Nutritional Yeast
Β½ tsp Β· B-complex vitamins, beta-glucans, immune support, dogs love the taste
Β½ tsp per serving
Rich in B1, B2, B6, beta-glucans for immune support. Plain only β€” not active/brewer's yeast. One of the best additions to this recipe.
Turmeric + Black Pepper
ΒΌ tsp + pinch Β· anti-inflammatory, joint support
ΒΌ tsp turmeric + tiny pinch black pepper
Curcumin is a powerful anti-inflammatory. Black pepper increases absorption by up to 2000%. Mix with a little coconut oil for best absorption (fat-soluble).
Blueberries (fresh or frozen)
2–3 berries Β· brain health, antioxidants, longevity
2–3 berries per serving, added raw
Anthocyanins support cognitive health and may slow aging. One of the best longevity foods available. Frozen are just as good β€” and cheaper.
Plain Pumpkin PurΓ©e
1 tsp Β· digestion, soluble fibre
1 tsp per serving
Regulates digestion both ways β€” good for loose stools and constipation. Unsweetened, no spices. Excellent for poodles with sensitive stomachs.
Fresh Flat-Leaf Parsley
Β½ tsp chopped Β· breath, kidneys, Vitamin K
Β½ tsp finely chopped per serving
Natural breath freshener, kidney support, Vitamin K and C. Flat-leaf only β€” not spring parsley which can be toxic in large amounts.
02

Digestive Support

Dried Ginger
Tiny pinch Β· anti-nausea, digestion, anti-inflammatory
Tiny pinch (β…› tsp) per serving
Anti-nausea, digestive support. Particularly useful for toy poodles who can have sensitive stomachs. Fresh or dried both work.
Chamomile (dried)
Pinch Β· calming, anti-inflammatory, digestion
Small pinch dried, or use weak chamomile tea as cooking liquid
Calming, anti-inflammatory, supports digestion. Particularly good on days your poodle seems anxious or has an unsettled stomach.
03

Use Sparingly

Dried Rosemary
Tiny pinch only Β· antioxidant Β· avoid in epilepsy
Literally a tiny pinch β€” less is more
Natural antioxidant and antimicrobial. Use very small amounts only. Avoid completely if your poodle has any history of seizures.

Rotating proteins weekly prevents amino acid gaps, reduces food sensitivity risk, and keeps your poodle interested. Keep all vegetables and supplements identical β€” only swap the primary protein.
